MidAmerican Energy to convert Iowa streetlights to LED
Streetlights throughout Iowa will soon become brighter, more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly through a new initiative led by MidAmerican Energy Co. The utility announced it will upgrade more than 100,000 of its streetlights in Iowa to light-emitting diode (LED) units beginning this month and continuing during the next 10 years, a move expected to save cities energy and money. The conversion project will be paid for by MidAmerican Energy, with no cost to municipalities unless they opt for an accelerated installation plan. MidAmerican Energy expects approximately 32 million kilowatt-hours of electricity will be saved annually once its 100,000-plus streetlights are converted to LEDs. This represents a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 22,000 tons — the same as removing 4,681 average cars off the street every year.
