Metro Waste Authority’s new $13.5 million transfer station in Grimes will accept its first trucks Thursday. The 28,700-square-foot facility will take 970 tons of trash a day from 118 garbage trucks and transfer it to 27 semitrailer trucks for the trip to the landfill, taking about 40 percent of the waste that had been going to the overloaded Delaware Avenue transfer station. The process saves money, lowers vehicle pollution and increases road safety, the agency reported. The facility also will accept hazardous household wastes from residents on 10 Saturdays each year.
