New nonprofit group will take over operation of Botanical Center this week
After operating the Des Moines Botanical & Environmental Center the past nine years, Des Moines Water Works will ceremonially hand over the keys to the cultural attraction to the new Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden at 9 a.m. Thursday. The Garden’s campaign for the renovations began in 2011, raising more than $11.6 million for the first phase of the multiyear project. The Botanical Garden will be open seven days a week through June 30. After a two-month closure for interior renovations, the facility will reopen again in September. Outdoor renovations will be completed throughout 2013 and 2014, and will include a new entry garden, water education garden, tree allée, event lawn encircled by perennial borders, display gardens, and reconfiguration of the parking lot. Des Moines Water Works will continue to partner with the Botanical Garden, offering $200,000 of annual in-kind contributions for 10 years.
