New report highlights inequality for women in America’s restaurants
Gender- and race-based segregation continues to grow in the U.S. food service industry, according to a new study from Restaurant Opportunities Center United.
“Ending Jim Crow in America’s Restaurants” examined 133 fine-dining restaurants around California, and found that women and people of color are often limited to low-paying positions.
Women make up 52 percent of all restaurant workers, but they disproportionately hold server positions in lower-paying segments of the industry, like low-tipping casual restaurants. Men hold an unequal amount of management and higher-level, non-management positions. Read more.
