Waukee Community and Economic Development Director Dan Dutcher made a quick call Wednesday to a real estate contact at Apple Inc. after reading that the company planned a second U.S. headquarters. He thought he knew the answer before asking, “So, is Apple coming to Waukee?” The reply was a version of “Are you kidding?” The reason: It’s too darn cold out here in the shiver belt. “I can’t get them to come out here in the winter,” Dutcher said. Apple reps have made plenty of warm-weather trips to Waukee, though, as the company plans a massive server farm and plans to eventually own 2,000 acres of land on the west side of the city.
