About an hour before presidential adviser Ivanka Trump and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds arrived at the Waukee Innovation and Learning Center on March 19, Waukee school district officials gathered several dozen APEX program students in the center of the building’s atrium, just a few feet away from where members of the press pool sat, waiting.

Speaking from the center of the crowd, one of those officials warned students to stay on topic during Trump’s visit to the two STEM demonstrations and the roundtable discussions, which 24 of those high school students would take part in. Trump’s schedule did not include time to take questions from students or media.

“This is not the time” to share personal views or ask questions, the Waukee official told the group. “This is the time to share with them what you’ve been working on” at APEX.

Students also were warned that the Secret Service would remove them from the area if they attempted to ask off-topic questions or make statements.
