314 wordsBusiness Record Insider, The Insider NotebookI felt like I officially joined the 21st century last weekend when I finally bought my first smartphone. (I’ll pause a moment for you millennials to stop laughing). Not to be too trendy or spend too much, I picked an Apple iPhone that’s a few versions behind version 7 that just came out. I’ll have to admit, after silently wondering what all the fuss was about for so long, that I had a lot of fun getting it set up and trying out all the features. I especially like the fingerprint recognition to unlock my phone without a password. The most frustrating thing is trying to hit the right #?!*! keys on the tiny keyboard. I actually timed out of three attempts at trying to enter my personal data so I could sign up for the App Store, and I had to ask my 19-year-old daughter to key it in for me. (It took her all of about 15 seconds.) I think I’m going to like having GPS for hard-to-find companies in deepest West Des Moines, and I’m proud to say I composed a whole two-sentence email using the voice recognition feature. And I’m really looking forward to getting the QR code reader app so that I can finally see what Drew McLellan is sending us with his weekly column! It’s probably too early to tell whether a smartphone will be a productivity enhancer or time suck for me, but since I’m not big on Facebook or Twitter, I’m pretty sure you won’t see me texting while walking downtown. At this early stage, I think the alarm feature might be helpful to remind me to check my phone at least a couple of times a day. But, as my editor reminds me, at least I’m now one step ahead of the ultra-hip owner of Raygun, Mike Draper, who still proudly sports a flip phone.
