NOTEBOOK: MidAmerican expects another 16-year run with no electricity rate increases

MidAmerican Energy’s Kathryn Kunert dropped an interesting nugget about the economic impact that the utility’s aggressive wind development in Iowa will have on electric rates during the Celebrate Business and Economic Impact Award luncheon held this month. Not only is MidAmerican quickly spinning toward its goal of 100 percent electricity production from wind, it’s pledging not to file another electric rate increase request until at least 2029. It last received a small rate increase in 2013, which was its first increase in 16 years. “That’s how we like to make an impact and how we like to give back to the Iowa community,” Kunert said. By next year with existing projects, 58 percent of the energy MidAmerican sells to retail customers in Iowa will be generated by wind, it estimates. When the company’s 2,000-megawatt Wind XI project is completed by the end of 2019, 85 percent of electricity sold in the state will be wind-generated.
