NOTEBOOK: New York Post headline about Bezos, Pecker sparks discussion of other all-time greats

The identical headline that the New York Post and Huffington Post carried while reporting the alleged extortion attempt involving media heavyweights Jeff Bezos and David Pecker became a social media hit. It’s a bit off color for the staid and professional pages of your Business Record, but you can see it here.

The online admiration of the double-meaning headline, just three words, prompted many discussions of other classic headlines. We thought we’d share a few here.

For my money, among serious stories, one of the all-time greats in Iowa came on Dec. 1, 1986, from the Quad-City Times the day after actor Cary Grant died of a stroke while in town for a performance at the Adler Theater that never happened: A Legend Dies in Our Arms

Of course some headlines, often written in a few minutes, or seconds, bring a chuckle.

Arizona Republic:
Arizona psychic hit by car says he never say it coming

Some are whimsical and informative at the same time. Here the Des Moines Register reported in a July 23, 1993, story on the return of water service to Des Moines homes as the city recovered from record flooding:
And on Day 12, we flushed

Of course, there are some headlines that get it wrong. Historically wrong in this case, from the Chicago Daily Tribune:
Dewey Defeats Truman
