NOTEBOOK – One Good Read: Banks and retailers are tracking how you type, swipe and tap

Have you heard of behavioral biometrics? I hadn’t until the New York Times explained how some banks are studying the way we interact with technology as a sort of digital fingerprint that identifies you. The story explains: “The way you press, scroll and type on a phone screen or keyboard can be as unique as your fingerprints or facial features. To fight fraud, a growing number of banks and merchants are tracking visitors’ physical movements as they use websites and apps. Some use the technology only to weed out automated attacks and suspicious transactions, but others are going significantly further, amassing tens of millions of profiles that can identify customers by how they touch, hold and tap their devices.” I’m unaware of any Iowa financial institutions that are using behavioral biometrics (contact us if you are!), but the idea reminded me of innovations bubbling up Greater Des Moines. The Business Record has featured stories about how Denim is looking at the future of digital insurance and how the internet of things — aka IoT devices — is a risk to businesses’ security. There’s a great amount of creativity and imagination going in accelerators and programs around Iowa. (Find stories about them at innovationia.com.)
