NOTEBOOK – One Good Read: For some baseball card collectors, the hobby is now an online hunt

Anyone who grew up in the ’70s can remember how baseball cards were a thing for a lot of kids, even those of us who were only casually interested in the game and the players. Here’s an interesting article from the Atlantic that delves into the business of baseball cards and how the card companies got greedy and flooded the market, making many collections near-worthless. Now, as the article explains, hobbyists can buy into online sessions where they can stake out certain cards they want as packs are broken open. As Eric Moskowitz writes, “it’s all about the thrill of the hunt.” Still, it’s a little sad that it won’t duplicate that great gum smell those cards had when you opened a new pack.
