NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: Modern nomads wander America’s back country

Last fall my wife and I took our 21-foot camper out west to our former home state of Wyoming for a vacation. One of the things we learned on that trip was how to “boondock” — using just our camper battery to power our water pump for the toilet and shower and a few lights but no microwave, plug-ins or other conveniences. It allowed us to camp for free in pristine mountain campgrounds designated as dispersed U.S. Forest Service sites. This article from the Guardian reminded me of that trip, and a few nomads of various types we encountered there as well. It highlights how thousands of people are adopting “van life” as the pandemic has forced them into a nomadic lifestyle.
