A map designed by Human Rights Campaign shows that Iowa protects citizens against discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation. Ditto for Minnesota and Illinois. But a whole column of states next door, running from North Dakota to Texas, have no statewide protections for either. Much of the southeast is in the same situation. Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan offer some protections, but only for public employees. The analysis looks at whether people can be fired for their identity or orientation.
