President Barack Obama on Tuesday appointed Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad as co-chairman of the Council of Governors.

The council was established by the National Defense Authorization Act in 2008 to strengthen the partnership between the federal and state governments in relation to national security.

The president designates two members of different political affiliations to serve as co-chairs. Branstad will work with General Tim Orr of the Iowa National Guard on council issues.
