The good news: Iowa’s obesity rate is better when compared with the rest of the nation than it was in 1995. The bad news: The state still had a 73 percent increase in the rate, according to a report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Iowa’s obesity rate was 28.1 percent last year, compared with 16.2 percent in 1995. Iowa moved from the 13th-most obese state to the 20th-most obese in national rankings, and obesity climbed at least 90 percent in 17 states.

Bloomberg reported that Medicare and Medicaid each spend more than 20 percent of their budget to treat illnesses related to obesity and smoking, deemed avoidable medical risks. To view the report, click here.
