ONE GOOD READ: Firm needs workers so badly, it’s putting them through drug rehab

John Stroup, CEO of Belden Inc. in Indiana, had a problem. One out of 10 job applicants was failing a pre-employment drug test. He came up with a surprising idea: Pay for their treatment and hire them afterward. “Belden started its experiment in March. Since then, they’ve had eight participants, five of whom were either first-time applicants or about ready to be hired through a temp staffing company before they hit the drug test,” writes CNN Money. In Iowa, steps have been taken just this past legislative session to address the opioid epidemic here. One step was a bill to stop “doctor shopping” — physicians will be required to register prescriptions with the state’s drug monitoring program within 24 hours. Like the Indiana case, Iowa also needs workers. Is this an example of a program that could be implemented in the state by the right company?
