The Public Patent Foundation, on behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses and organic agricultural organizations, including the Southeast Iowa Organic Association, sued Monsanto Co.  on Tuesday to challenge the agricultural giant’s patents on genetically modified seeds, the St. Louis Business Journal reported.  The plaintiffs said they sued preemptively to protect themselves from being accused of patent infringement should their crops or land ever become inadvertently contaminated with Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds. The suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, represent family farmers, small businesses and organizations from within the organic agriculture community that say they are “increasingly threatened by genetically modified seed contamination despite using their best efforts to avoid it.” Click here to read the complaint.
