Pappajohn business plan winners announced

The John Pappajohn Iowa Business Plan Competition announced winners at the Iowa Department of Economic Development entrepreneurial conference.

The $25,000 grand-prize winner was West Des Moines-based Energy Control Technologies, which designs, manufactures and implements automation systems for the oil and gas, biofuels and industrial and manufacturing markets.

The $15,000 second-place award went to IDx, an Iowa City company working to commercialize low-cost eye disease screening tools developed at the University of Iowa.

The $10,000 third-place winner was LuCella Biosciences of Ames, which provides carbohydrate-based reagents to accelerate immunology, biology and vaccine discoveries. Four companies won the $1,000 honorable mention prize: Cabin Coffee Franchising Inc., Growth Design Energy Mt. Valley LLC, J&J Solutions and Pathovacs. Kum and Go L.C. co-founder W.A. Krause was recognized by the Pappajohn Center with a lifetime achievement award.
