Partnership joins new Midwest collaborative

202 wordsAll Latest News, Economic DevelopmentThe Greater Des Moines Partnership today joined officials from St. Louis, Kansas City and Omaha to announce the creation of the Heartland Civic Collaborative to promote regional economic development.
The group already endorsed passage of a new federal transportation bill and also has its eyes on tax incentives for the development of energy-efficient products and green buildings and support of the federal Renewable Fuel Standard to encourage biofuels production.
The collaborative will focus these priority areas:
- Transportation and logistics, including public-private partnerships to help create new transportation capacity.
- Life sciences, with support of federal programs that promote the commercialization of technology.
- Entrepreneurship, including a call for a permanent research and experimentation tax credit.
- Education and workforce development, including a call for an expansion of the visa program to help boost the workforce of highly skilled workers.
- Health care, with support of calls to contain costs and to revamp Medicaid to increase efficiencies.
- Energy, with support of the modernization and expansion of the energy infrastructure.
The collaborative plans a Feb. 17 transportation futures symposium in Kansas City, featuring William Clay Ford Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Co. That will be the first in a series of community conversations.
