Pheasant hunters take more birds; hunting good for business

Hunters bagged more pheasants this year, the fifth straight that the number of birds taken rose. The season is a multimillion-dollar business in Iowa, benefiting gas stations, restaurants, motels and sporting goods stores, for example. More than 56,000 hunters bought licenses in 2015, and killed 270,000 pheasants, an increase of 24 percent over the previous year. That’s the highest number since 2009. Iowa has struggled to regain pheasant population with a loss of habitat to farming. Hunters used to kill more than a million pheasants a year in Iowa. Read the full news release.
