Polk County, Meals on Wheels partner to provide meals for veterans

178 wordsAll Latest News, Iowa Stops HungerThe Polk County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved funding for Meals on Wheels to facilitate daily meal deliveries to veterans in Polk County. The new agreement between WesleyLife Community Services, operator of Meals on Wheels, and Polk County Veteran Affairs will provide daily meals to up to 20 veterans, amounting to a total of 5,200 meals annually. In Polk County, 13% of Meals on Wheels recipients are veterans. The partnership will provide sustainable funding for approximately 20% of these veterans, a news release said. The collaboration will be in effect through June 30, 2026, with an option to extend the agreement for an additional two years beginning in fiscal year 2026. “Nationally, veterans face higher levels of food insecurity, and this vital investment will ensure that veterans in Polk County do not go hungry,” Shannon Draayer, Executive Director of Community Nutrition at WesleyLife, said in a prepared statement. “We deeply appreciate the unanimous support from the Polk County Board of Supervisors and their commitment to combating food insecurity in our community, particularly for our veterans.”
