A Selzer and Co. poll released by the Iowa Tobacco Prevention Alliance found that 59 percent of respondents believe government has the right to restrict smoking, and 44 percent agree that things in Iowa are “headed in the right direction,” as opposed to 43 percent who think they are going in the wrong direction.

The poll of 500 registered voters was taken Feb. 7-9. The poll also found that 68 percent of respondents feel that the state should keep funding for all services addressing tobacco use, alcohol, drugs and gambling.

Respondents were divided nearly equally between Republicans and Democrats.
