Background and update: The site plan for a unique Des Moines-area business model that combines a bar for humans with animal services such as a dog park is scheduled to be before Des Moines’ Plan and Zoning Commission on Thursday.

A two-story, 29,800-square-foot facility is proposed on 7.2 acres currently owned by Cornerstone Family Church, according to a site plan submitted to the city.

The former industrial site has been cleared for redevelopment, according to a city document.

Kyle and Megan Casey of Norwalk have been planning the development for more than two years. The facility would include an indoor/outdoor dog park and other animal services such as a veterinary clinic, grooming and boarding. Also planned are food and beverages for dog owners.

City staff is recommending the commission approve the site plan and proposed design alternatives, according to a city document.

“Staff believes that the developer has proposed a quality development to serve a unique business model,” city staff wrote in a document to the commission. “There are unique elements [in the development] including the need for large areas of open space for the various pet exercise areas and other large areas devoted to outside spaces for pet owners and bar patrons alike.”

The proposed development fits in the area’s “business park setting,” staff wrote.

The facility is proposed to include:

• Your Best Friend’s Bar, a pub, patio and coffeehouse with an indoor/outdoor off-leash dog park, food trucks and live music events.

• Mo’Tail & Spaw, which will provide grooming and bathing services, day and nighttime boarding, and community outreach events and classes.

• Kai’s Dog Training Academy, which will provide private training, group classes and dog day care. Kai’s, which is located in Ankeny, will also train Paws & Pints’ staff on how best to interact with dogs as well as train the rangers who will supervise the dog park, Kyle Casey has said.

• Bone Bar & Boutique, which will offer dog foods, toys and treats such as bacon-infused water.

Paws & Pints, scheduled to open in 2021, will operate on a membership basis, Kyle Casey has previously said. Day passes will also be available.
