Office Outlook
Thursday, Aug. 14 | Noon - 1 p.m. | VIRTUAL EVENT
Nearly 27% of office space is vacant in Des Moines’ central business district. That’s more than 1.9 million square feet of prime real estate sitting empty. In the Greater Des Moines area, 17.2%, or 3.7 million square feet of office space is unoccupied. What is to become of that empty office space? At our second Project 515 event, we’ll sit down with a panel of experts to explore options to repurpose and fill those vacant spaces and how the office landscape may change for years to come. We’ll also explore trends in redevelopment and construction and how, according to some in the sector, activity has slowed in 2025. We’ll try to answer why that is happening and when that trend will be reversed, and what the future holds for office space in Central Iowa.
TOPICS WE’LL COVER INCLUDE:
- What opportunities for redevelopment exist and what are the challenges that need to be addressed?
- What specific areas or projects are they eyeing that may be transformational for the community?
- How is the return of workers to the office at some companies affecting the use of space and redevelopment strategies?
- What does their future vision of Des Moines look like?

What is Project515?
Project515 is a series of real estate- and development-focused virtual events that dive deep into three specific subsections of the industry: office, retail and housing. The series goal is to illuminate future challenges and trends, while amplifying discussions with the region’s key stakeholders who do business directly in the sectors and with those business leaders dependent on the health and vitality of the real estate industry for a strong and growing community. Coverage of these panel-style discussions will appear in both written and video form and be integrated across the Business Record in print, in the weekly CRE e-newsletter, at businessrecord.com and on social platforms.
