The U.S. Department of Transportation officially announced its $478-billion, six-year transportation reauthorization proposal Monday, Trucking Info reported.

A key piece of the legislation would be a tripling of the budget of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s defects investigation office to address complaints that the federal government was slow to react to life-threatening vehicle defects. Possible fines for companies would increase from $35 million to $300 million.

The bill includes $317 billion for roads and bridges and $115 billion for buses, light rail and other transportation options.

The cash would in part come from a one-time tax on overseas corporate profits.

The fate of the request in Congress is unclear.

The bill also calls for $18 billion for a “new multimodal freight grant program to fund innovative rail, highway and port projects that will improve the efficient movement of goods across the country,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The proposed budget also would provide $7.5 billion over six years for awards to states, tribes and metropolitan planning organizations that adopt “bold, innovative strategies and best practices in transportation that will have long-term impact on all projects across the transportation programs.”
