After three years of coordinating disaster-relief efforts, the Rebuild Iowa Office (RIO) will officially close tomorrow. The RIO was created in June 2008 by executive order in response to the historic floods, storms and tornadoes that affected more than 40,000 Iowans and resulted in a presidential disaster declaration for 85 of Iowa’s 99 counties. In 2009, the RIO was unanimously formalized by the Iowa Legislature, which also established the office’s June 2011 sunset date. The office assisted in securing more than $4.3 billion in federal recovery funding.
