Recommended reads to start your week
It feels like a Monday, but it’s already Tuesday. To help you get moving, here are a few statewide stories and a few national stories that caught my roving reading eyes over the weekend.
This article from CNN Money details an action taken Friday that could affect foreign entrepreneurs: “The Department of Homeland Security has formally proposed to rescind the so-called startup visa, a program that was enacted by the Obama administration.” The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier explores a child care shortage in its area and explains how one local business came up with solutions for working parents. If you like knowing the “why” behind how a business starts, here’s a nice story about three sisters and a mom who opened up a graphic shirt printing company together. The Burlington Hawk Eye (yes, that’s spelled right, two words) shares details of an online artist registry for their community. And finally this one: It’s difficult to fathom that $168 million isn’t considered a successful movie opening, but here’s a Hollywood Reporter article suggesting that: “Lucasfilm and Disney are facing a moment of reckoning. Over Memorial Day weekend, they were jolted when ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ battled hard to hit $103 million domestically and bombed overseas with $65 million. The film badly trailed the launch of fellow stand-alone pic ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ which debuted to $155 million domestically in 2016 on its way to topping $1.056 billion globally. At its current rate, ‘Solo’ may not gross much more than $400 million in all after costing at least $250 million to produce before marketing.” |
