It’s official: more women are running for Iowa’s state and federal offices in 2016 than ever before in the state’s history.

According to 50-50 in 2020, a bipartisan, nonprofit organization working to achieve gender parity in all Iowa political offices, a total of 65 women — 27 incumbents and 38 non-incumbents — are on the Iowa ballot for the Nov. 8 general election.

The figures were compiled by 50-50 in 2020 and based on filings with the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. It includes 50 women running in the Iowa House races, 11 in the Iowa Senate and four in races for the U.S. Senate and House.

“(This is) another step on the path to equity for women in Iowa government,” said 50-50 in 2020 co-founder Jean Lloyd-Jones, a former state senator from Iowa City. “And how appropriate that we can be announcing this just in time for Women’s Equality Day, as it (was) observed Friday, Aug. 26.”
