The Des Moines Register has named Laura Hollingsworth, the paper’s general manager, its new president and publisher.

Hollingsworth has run the day-to-day operations at the Register since 2005, serving under outgoing publisher Mary Stier, who is leaving next week to start her own company. From 2002 to 2005, Hollingsworth was the paper’s vice president of advertising.

The publisher oversees all aspects of the newspaper, including news, advertising, distribution and production. As publisher, Hollingsworth will also sit on the newspaper’s editorial board and weigh in on its editorial positions.

Stier announced she was leaving Aug. 14 to become chief executive officer of The Brilliance Group, a Des Moines-based multimedia business aimed at “Boomer women.”

In addition to her duties as publisher, she is also a senior group president of two regional Gannett newspaper groups, overseeing 25 Midwestern and Southern daily newspapers, more than 350 non-daily publications and 27 Web sites. Stier was named president and publisher of the Register in 2000.
