Report: Multiple taxes on wireless services hit Hispanics hardest
American consumers are subject to overlapping taxes on purchases of cellphone and other digital services, with Hispanics the most affected by taxes from multiple jurisdictions, according to a new report. The report, “Taxes and Fees: Barriers to Hispanic Connectivity” by The Hispanic Institute, calls for Congress to pass legislation that would require uniform tax rules for online purchases of digital goods and wireless phone services. More than 43 percent of Hispanic households use wireless phones exclusively, a greater share than either whites or blacks, the report said. Hispanics are projected to spend more than $500 million on mobile applications and $17.6 billion on mobile devices this year. The report can be downloaded on the institute’s website at www.thehispanicinstitute.org.
