Gov. Kim Reynolds has contacted Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred, urging him to support Iowa’s five minor league baseball teams, the governor’s office announced. The news comes after MLB announced a restructuring plan that would cut ties to 42 minor league baseball teams, including three Iowa teams in Burlington, Clinton and Davenport. In her letter, Reynolds said Iowa’s five teams typically employ more than 200 people, excluding players, coaches and other MLB employees. Iowa’s minor teams also provide significant charitable contributions to regional communities, including college scholarships, flu shot drives for children and other fundraisers, Reynolds added: “In small communities such as these, that kind of philanthropy simply cannot be replaced.”
