Des Moines Roosevelt High School ranks No. 2 in the state when it comes to preparing students for post-secondary education, according to the High School Challenge index released by The Washington Post. The newspaper began the index in 1998 as a way to measure how well high schools in the Washington, D.C., area were preparing students for college. This year, the Post grabbed about 7 percent of all high schools in the country by using a formula that divided the number of advanced placement and international baccalaureate tests given last year by the number of graduating seniors. The Post noted that the index does not rank the overall quality of a school. Cedar Rapids Washington High School ranked first in Iowa. Other schools making the grade were Ames High School, Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School and Iowa City West High School.
