Describe your workout regimen.

I love to be active every day and do a variety of workouts throughout the week, including the standard running, biking and swimming. I also like the classes at my gym, including boot camp, Pilates and Bosu ball, which is similar to step aerobics. I like to have a goal in sight, so I am consistently training for something and that also helps with motivation. I love the feeling of a good hard workout, but one of my favorite workouts of the week is my yoga class on Sunday nights.

How have you changed that regimen over the years?

In the past, I mostly trained for running races, but I am doing a few triathlons this summer so my workouts are more varied.

Do you work out with a group or alone? Why?

I do both. I sometimes like the solitude of doing a long run on my own and clearing my head, but I have also loved training with my triathlon group this past six months. Groups help hold you accountable, push you harder, understand what you are going through and help make the miles pass quickly.

What are the keys to your diet?

I love food and am consistently eating throughout the day to keep my metabolism moving. I don’t really diet but try to stay away from a lot of processed foods. My taste buds have changed over the years, and I really prefer whole grains and fresh fruit and veggies. I do have a major sweet tooth and my downfalls are ice cream, peanut butter and chocolate. All three together? The dream dessert!

What motivates you to stay in shape?

Once again, I love to eat, so working out gives me more wiggle room on food choices (and relieves me of guilt!). Being in shape also gives me more energy and makes it easier to keep up with my three young busy kids!

What advice would you give to someone just starting on a workout program?

Work out in the morning if you can. Even if you aren’t a morning person, you will feel better and you will have it over and done with for the day.

Any fitness goals you’re working toward?

I completed my first sprint triathlon last week and will do Hy-Vee this weekend. Overall, I just want to continue getting stronger and staying healthy.
