Greater Des Moines businessman David Schwartz has been named CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, effective June 1.
The YMCA has operated under interim directors since the resignation Jan. 7 of Vernon Delpesce, who had led the organization through a period of rapid growth but also saw his relationship with local business leaders and some board members sour after encouraging the use of federal tax credits to build a swimming pool at the Wellmark YMCA in downtown Des Moines. The tax credits could not be secured, and the swimming pool has yet to built, nearly 18 months after the facility opened to much fanfare.
Schwartz has been president and CEO of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce since 2014. Schwartz will remain with the chamber through May 31, according to a release from the West Des Moines chamber. During his time with the organization, he has increased revenues 40 percent, created a professional women’s organization, and created the Business Roundtable for small to medium-size companies.
Prior to working with the Chamber, Schwartz was the co-founder and president of Bearence Management Group in West Des Moines. He also has been a managing director with Marsh & McLennan Cos.
According to a release, he also has fundraising experience with the Dowling/St. Joseph Foundation and with the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
Schwartz joins the YMCA at a time when it is trying to fund the estimated $10 million swimming pool, a move that is key to bolstering membership at the Wellmark YMCA. In addition to private fundraising, those efforts include renegotiating a lease with a Nashville-based real estate investment trust that owns the YMCA Healthy Living Center in Clive and renegotiating the terms of a loan with West Bank. |
