Second guilty plea in Equitable Building asbestos case
Real estate developer Bob Knapp will plead guilty to federal charges stemming from asbestos removal at the Equitable Building, 604 Locust St., according to a document filed today by his attorney, William Kutmus.
Knapp was scheduled to go on trial Monday on charges that he conspired with the construction supervisor on the project, Russell Coco, to illegal remove and dispose of asbestos, in violation of the federal Clean Air Act. Coco pleaded guilty to the charges Feb. 15 in U.S. District Court in Des Moines.
Judge James Gritzner set a March 3 hearing date for Knapp to enter his plea. Kutmus said in a court filing that the plea agreement was reached today.
According the document, Knapp was hospitalized Feb. 17 with “life-threatening heart related issues.” He has been released from the hospital and is under a doctor’s care, Kutmus said in the court document.
