Skate DSM receives grant for ‘Get on Board’

138 wordsAll Latest News, Arts and CultureSkate DSM, a nonprofit organization focused on promoting and supporting the skateboarding community in Des Moines, has received a grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity to fund the “Get on Board Project.” The project provides skateboards and helmets to local kids. The grant will also be used to offer basic skateboarding instruction to ensure kids are practicing safely. The grant amount was not announced. The project will supply skateboards and helmets to more than 750 students in grades K-8 in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties. In addition to the Get on Board Project, Skate DSM hosts events like the Des Moines StreetStyle Open and Push Start clinics to keep the skateboarding community active. The project puts Iowa on the national skateboarding map and is the first of its kind, the organization said in a release.
