Soledad O’Brien to headline Iowa Juneteenth Observance
Broadcast journalist and executive producer Soledad O’Brien will be headlining Iowa’s annual Juneteenth Celebration in Des Moines, Insight on Business in the News Hour reports. The Iowa Juneteenth Observance is scheduled for June 2-16, organizer Dwana Bradley said, including a Black Business Expo scheduled on June 15 at Drake University. O’Brien will speak at the Community Builders Appreciation Banquet on June 14, starting at 5 p.m. in the Drake University Olmsted Center. Juneteenth is a national celebration commemorating the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. The Iowa Juneteenth Observance has been celebrated since 1993, and was established as an official day of recognition by former Gov. Tom Vilsack in 2002. In Iowa, Juneteenth is observed on the third Saturday in June.
