Some fun ways to address hunger in Iowa
More than 350,000 Iowans live at or near the poverty level, and many have to make difficult decisions between paying the bills and putting food on the table. As Iowa’s harvest season draws to a close, several organizations are working to address the problem of hunger in the Hawkeye State.
The University of Iowa and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation jointly announced this morning they have made a $20,000 donation to the Iowa Food Bank Association. The donation is a follow-up to an “America Needs Farmers” card stunt earlier in which University of Iowa football fans spelled out that slogan with cards during America Needs Farmers Day at Kinnick Stadium.
“We are proud of our Hawkeye fans and we knew they would embrace the card stunt and, more importantly, ANF Day at Kinnick because they understand the many contributions farmers make to our family table and to our economy,” said Gary Barta, the university’s director of athletics, in a press release. “We are also very proud of our partnership with the Iowa Farm Bureau. It’s one that is giving back to our communities in ways that go well beyond touchdowns on Saturday afternoons,”
In another football-related initiative, Aviva USA yesterday launched the Aviva Football Road Trip + Canned Food Drive. Participants can register for a chance to win a chauffeured ride for four to a college football game of their choice when they donate at least one canned food item at area supermarkets. All donations will go to the Food Bank of Iowa. For more information, visit www.avivafootballroadtrip.com
On Nov. 17-18, radio station Star 102.5 will hold its annual Combat Hunger food drive, Organizations can register to receive a Combat Hunger Food Drive manual containing ideas for organizing and advertising a food drive. The Iowa Motor Truck Association will pick up donated items during the drive. For more information and to register, click here.
