It’s official. MidAmerican Energy Co. provided more than half of customers’ electricity last year from renewable sources such as wind energy, the Iowa Utilities Board confirmed. The board reported that MidAmerican provided 50.8 percent of its retail electric load from renewables. “MidAmerican Energy has achieved an exciting milestone as a renewable energy leader,” Adam Wright, MidAmerican Energy president and CEO, said in a statement. “We have now crossed the 50-yard line and we’re moving closer to the goal, which is the vision we announced in 2016 to ultimately provide 100 percent renewable energy for our customers.” Many businesses report the percentage of their energy that comes from renewables as part of their sustainability goals and MidAmerican now certifies the sources. On May 30, MidAmerican announced plans to be the first investor-owned electric utility in the nation to generate renewable energy equal to 100 percent of its customers’ usage on an annual basis, if its latest wind expansion is completed in 2020 as planned.
