The Iowa Department of Human Services announced today that Mikki Stier has been appointed director of the Iowa Medicaid Enterprise. Stier, who has more than 33 years of health care experience in several states, most recently was vice president of government and external relations at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines. In her new role, she will oversee a $4.2 billion program that serves more than a half-million Iowans each year. “Mikki Stier has many years of leadership experience in health care and working with government, and she understands the needs of Iowans who receive Medicaid benefits,” DHS Director Charles Palmer said in a release. Stier replaces Jennifer Vermeer, who resigned in July 2014 to accept a position with the University of Iowa as assistant vice president of medical affairs with University of Iowa Health care. Stier holds a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Colorado, a Bachelor of Science in occupational therapy from Colorado State University, and serves on a number of local and national boards. She begins her new duties on May 27.
