Nancy Carroll dedicated the latter part of her career to advocating for the health and well-being of the aging community in Ames. As the former executive director of Heartland of Story County, she saw firsthand that traditional senior centers weren’t keeping pace with what today’s 60+ population truly wants and needs.

With a bold vision and strong community partnerships, including local medical centers, municipalities, health providers, senior-focused organizations, and private donors, Nancy reimagined what aging could look like in a vibrant, inclusive environment.

This vision came to life through a collaboration with 10Fold Architecture + Engineering, resulting in the Sixty Forward Center—a newly built, 16,000 SF community-centered facility in Ames that sets a new standard for active aging. The Center offers high-quality amenities built around three core pillars: physical activity, social connection, and healthy living.

Key features include a bright atrium, state-of-the-art cardio and fitness classrooms, hobby hub, multi-purpose room, bistro, and duckpin bowling. Additionally, the Center houses administrative offices as well as an adult day center.

Built for Connection
Since opening in Fall 2024, the Sixty Forward Center has welcomed more than 1,000 visitors each week. Whether participating in a hobby group, catching up over lunch, or playing duckpin bowling, visitors find countless ways to connect. With a diverse range of programs and activities, the Center offers a welcoming space to reconnect with old friends, build new relationships, and stay engaged.

Designed for Flexibility and Inclusion
With user-friendly technology, adaptable spaces, and a focus on reducing physical and financial barriers, the Center supports more uses than anyone could have imagined. While designed for adults aged 60 to 100, it invites guests of all ages and encourages intergenerational engagement. It’s a space where everyone can feel at home and make it their own.

Supporting Whole-Person Health
From state-of-the-art EGYM equipment and group fitness classes to on-site mental health resources and adult day services, the Center provides holistic support. Usage of adult day services has increased by 50%, and over 110 individuals are served regularly through Meals on Wheels, extending care into the broader community.

In many towns across Iowa, older adults often seek community in libraries, gas stations, or their own homes. The Sixty Forward Center sets a new precedent. It redefines aging not as a decline, but as a vibrant, active, and connected phase of life—and it offers a replicable model for communities across the state.
