A congressional committee is seeking executive pay and other financial information from 52 major health insurance companies, among them Des Moines-based Principal Financial Group Inc. and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa. U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, a Democrat from California, sent the letters on Monday, which seek data on executive pay, revenues and profits from each of the companies by next month. The request move comes amid the contentious debate over creation of a government-run health system to operate alongside private providers and insurers.
The Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines today announced that Summit Estates in Urbandale will be the site for HomeShowExpo 2010. The 24th annual HomeShowExpo will offer public tours in July 2010, showcasing the latest home trends and features. The 2010 Expo will be held over three weekends in July at Summit Estates, located in northwest Urbandale on 161st Street south of Douglas Parkway. The city of Des Moines is now accepting applications for the 2010 Combined Charities Campaign, an annual opportunity for employees to contribute to different charities through payroll deductions or a one-time donation. Applications for all eligible charities will be reviewed by a campaign committee of employees representing each city department, and up to 10 charities will be recommended to the city manager for inclusion in the campaign. Dubuque-based furniture manufacturer Flexsteel Industries Inc. reported fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $800,000, or 12 cents per share, for the quarter ended June 30, compared with net income of $300,000, or 5 cents per share, in the prior-year quarter. Net sales for the fourth quarter were $74.6 million, a 26 percent decrease from $100.6 million a year earlier. The company reported a net loss for the fiscal year of $1.5 million, or 23 cents per share.
