Three hundred sixty-seven manufacturing employees were placed on indefinite layoff at John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline, Ill., on Monday. The company said the layoffs affect production workers with the least seniority and happened as a result of reduced market demand for the factory’s products.

After-tax profits of U.S. retail corporations with assets of $50 million and over totaled $13.3 billion in second quarter, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report. That is up $5.9 billion from the $7.4 billion recorded in the first quarter of 2009 and up $0.9 billion from the 12.4 billion recorded one year ago. See the full report.

Patrick McEvoy resigned as chief executive of Multi-Financial Securities Corp., the smallest of four broker-dealers in the ING Groep NV Advisor Network, Investment News reported Monday. ING is continuing an evaluation of the broker-dealers that could lead to their sale, according to the report. Read the full story.

Maria Clapham, a professor of psychology and chair of the psychology department at Drake University, will give a free lecture titled “Capturing Creativity: Can it be Done?” at 7 p.m. tonight in Old Main’s Sheslow Auditorium, 2507 University Ave. The lecture will explore efforts to capture the meaning and power of creativity.
