Box office proceeds from the premiere of the independent movie “Falling for Grace” will go to flood relief efforts. The movie, which was produced, written and directed by Fay Anne Lee, who also has the lead role, was brought to Des Moines by independent film fan Mike Coppola and will debut at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at his Fleur Cinema & Café, 4545 Fleur Drive. Lee will attend showings today and Saturday and discuss her experiences producing and self-distributing the film.

The Polk County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday, Aug. 5, on whether to direct funds collected from the Ridin’ the Storm Out concert to the Home Restoration Program administered by the Polk County Housing Trust Fund. The program will give immediate assistance to flood-affected homeowners and expedite the rehabilitation of homes damaged by floodwater primarily in the Birdland, Saylor Township, Pleasant Hill and Four Mile areas. The county and Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino hosted the benefit concert and pledged to match dollar-for-dollar the funds collected from the concert, bringing the total raised to $550,000. The city of Des Moines also contributed $125,000 to the Polk County Home Restoration Program.

The Henry B. Tippie College of Business will mark 150 years of business education at the University of Iowa with a dinner and gala celebration on Sept. 5 at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort in Riverside, Iowa. Business education at the University of Iowa began with a moral philosophy class offered by the history department in 1858. The course examined political economy. The university offered its first bachelor’s degree program in business in 1890 and created a separate College of Commerce in 1921. Today, the Tippie College is the second-largest college at the University of Iowa, with about 2,500 undergraduates. More than 3,100 Tippie graduates work in Polk County.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines has awarded nearly $1.3 million in affordable housing grants in Iowa to be used for down payments, closing costs, construction costs and rehabilitation assistance. The seven projects slated for completion with these grants will create 232 affordable housing units.

The Chicago Community Trust and Affiliates has contributed $25,000 to the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation’s 2008 Flood Relief and Recovery Fund.

Due to recent flooding and severe weather, Gov. Chet Culver has announced an extension of business tax filing deadlines. Iowa Workforce Development has extended the deadline to Aug. 29 for filing Second Quarter Unemployment Insurance Quarterly Reports and Contributions. Employers should submit their requests for extensions in writing along with their account number and state that they were affected by the severe weather. Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. is expanding its MarketPoint online grain marketing program to Iowa and all of Nebraska after a successful pilot offering in central Nebraska. The online resource allows farmers to post their crops online to multiple buyers. Once posted, computers monitor bid and ask prices until a contract settles or expires. MarketPoint also provides participating growers with reports summarizing their grain sales for the year.
