Deere & Co. today announced today that it is increasing the number of people being laid off at its Davenport plant by 10, the Associated Press reported. Deere said it would place 200 employees on indefinite layoff, up from the previously announced 190 employees. The layoff will be effective Feb. 16.
Meredith Corp.’s board of directors today announced a dividend of 22.5 cents per share, payable on March 13 to shareholders of record on Feb. 27. The dividend represents a 4.7 percent increase in the company’s annual dividend. Meredith has paid a dividend for 62 consecutive years and has increased its dividend for 16 consecutive years.
Wells Fargo & Co. originated more residential mortgages last year than any other U.S. lender, the Charlotte Business Journal reported. According to MortgageDaily.com, the rankings were shaped by last year’s mega-mergers, such as Wells Fargo’s merger with Wachovia Corp., which allowed Wells Fargo to maintain fourth-quarter originations even as other lenders slowed from the third quarter. JPMorgan Chase & Co., which acquired Washington Mutual Inc. in September, ranked No. 2 last year with $185.3 billion in originations. Charlotte-based Bank of America Corp. ranked No. 3, with $181 billion in funding last year.

About 20 million Chinese rural migrants have lost jobs as China’s economic growth continues to falter, Reuters reported. A recent survey showed that 15.3 percent of the 130 million migrants who moved from villages to cities had returned jobless, Chen Xiwen, director of the Office of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, said at a news conference. Chen added that China will have about 25 million rural unemployed this year.
