Member tours have been suspended for 2008 as Great Ape Trust of Iowa begins a massive cleanup effort after floodwaters covered the entire 230-acre campus.The Trust has sustained significant damage to its infrastructure, including an access road that remains under water, and four modular administrative offices are considered a complete loss. Members who had signed up for tours will be given priority in the 2009 tour season if their memberships are current, said Al Setka, director of communications. Refunds will not be made, as membership did not guarantee a tour, given the limited availability of tour spots. More membership information is available at https://members.greatapetrust.org/.
Holmes Murphy & Associates recently announced its expansion into the Scottsdale, Ariz., market. The expansion was made possible through the acquisition of the employee benefits practice of Kirke Insurance. Jeff Kirke and Linda King, previously with Kirke Insurance, will open the Scottsdale office.
Mortgage application volume fell 8.7 percent during the week ended June 13, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s weekly application survey. The mortgage application index fell to 508.4 from 557.1 the previous week. Refinance application volume tumbled 15 percent, while purchase activity declined 4.3 percent during the week.
Full Court Press Inc. hopes to open Sbrocco by this weekend. The new bar and restaurant with a focus on fresh, local, organic and seasonal foods and wine pairings was scheduled to open last Tuesday in 208 Court Ave., but flooding forced the owners to move everything out at the last minute. Shorty’s bar and the wine shop in the basement will not be ready by this weekend and people are encouraged to call 282-3663 for updates. Full Court Press also is assessing whether to reopen Buzzard Billy’s after it was completely flooded last week. The company’s other businesses in downtown – Royal Mile, High Life Lounge, el Bait Shop and Hessen Haus – are open for business.
Gateway Market will open its new location on Sunday at 8 a.m. at Village of Ponderosa with music and food sampling. A ribbon cutting will be held Monday at 9 a.m.
Rockwell Collins announced Monday that it will make a $2 million contribution to aid local flood relief efforts in response to historic flooding in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City areas. The funds will be used to support the immediate needs of flood victims, as well as ongoing clean-up and restoration activities. Rockwell also announced yesterday details of how employees, retirees, customers, suppliers and other friends of the company can make financial donations to the newly established Rockwell Collins Flood Recovery Fund.
