Tournament Club of Iowa closes, looks for new management
Tournament Club of Iowa, a golf course designed by Arnold Palmer and developed by Knapp Properties Inc. and Enebak Construction of Minnesota, has laid off all of its employees and will begin searching Friday for new management, said Jake Enebak, president of the construction company’s golf affiliate, Tradition Golf Co.
“The long and short of it is that every golf course that I operate is closing on Sunday and in three out of the five places, we’re laying off everybody and saving money over the winter,” he said.
The company will continue to honor events that have been booked over the winter, he said.
As for the 2011 golf season, “I’ve decided that we are going to go a different direction with our management team,” Enebak said.
Play was down last summer at the Polk City course, with about 20,000 rounds booked, largely because of wet weather, about 2,000 fewer rounds than in a normal year, he said.
“Like every other business, people are looking to pare down some expense,” Enebak said. “The last few years have been pretty tough on everybody, and we’re the same. We’re looking to save some costs and be a little more efficient.”
