The University of Northern Iowa has created the School of Health and Human Sciences to address the rising need for health professionals in Iowa. Approved by the Iowa Board of Regents, the reorganization of health-focused programs, including a new nursing major, is intended to strengthen UNI’s appeal to students pursuing health care careers. Under the leadership of Dean Brenda Bass, the School of Health and Human Sciences will house UNI’s nursing program and other established programs like athletic training, kinesiology, gerontology, public health, family services, counseling and social work. The school will serve as a central hub for health programs and academic advising, collaborating closely with departments that offer pre-professional pathways for aspiring doctors, dentists, physical therapists, pharmacists, veterinarians, occupational therapists, optometrists and others. The establishment of the School of Health and Human Sciences aligns with the growing demand for health care professionals, with the health care sector projected to add 2 million new jobs over the next decade. Additionally, there is an increasing need for mental health services, with a 22% projected job growth in related fields.
