Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL) residential customers in Iowa owe the utility more than $6.8 million in unpaid heating bills from this past winter, the company said Friday. As of March 31, 24,872 IPL customers were 60 days or more behind on their payments, with an average balance owed of $275. The amount owed by customers who are in arrears is up nearly $1.4 million from last year, IPL said in a release. Today ends the seasonal winter moratorium on utility shutoffs, and the company urged customers with unpaid balances to make arrangements for payments or to apply for low-income assistance programs.
