Job one

Lou McDow joined the Central Iowa chapter of the American Red Cross when Hurricane Katrina hit, then became so involved that she recently quit her part-time job as an accountant to focus on her volunteer efforts with the organization.

Following Hurricane Katrina, McDow worked to organize volunteers who went to New Orleans, raise funds for the organization and help with accounting needs. Since then, she has become a trained disaster volunteer, being on call 24/7 to respond when a local disaster strikes. She also volunteers at least 25 to 30 hours a week in the health and safety department or at the front desk, said Mary Kruger Eyler, director of volunteers.

“She’s touched a lot of lives through the many different positions she’s held at the Red Cross in such a short amount of time,” Kruger Eyler said. “A large share is her positive attitude, her sensitivity and respect to disasters and the needs of the Red Cross in general.”
